Carlos Toraño’s grandfather, Santiago, came to Cuba in 1916. Still, under the age of 20, Santiago began brokering Cuban tobacco on and off the island for his business, Toraño & Co. Success came quickly to Santiago. Soon, he sent for his three brothers in Spain to join him in Cuba and help grow this family business. Carlos, Jose, and Jaime, Santiago’s three sons, would all join the company and expand it significantly. At their apex in Cuba, the Toraño family-controlled 23 farms and a combined 400 – 600 acres where they mostly grew shade wrappers.
