In the heart of the modern Maduro craze, it’s easy to forget a time before dark, meaty wrappers ruled the land and everyone clamored for more power, more spice, and above all, more darkness. Back in the 90s when people were first rediscovering cigars, they were far less common. In fact, the CAO L’Anniversaire Maduro was one of the first Maduro-wrapped cigars to earn high marks and a 90+ rating from the “masters of taste!” Cigar Insider even put it inside the top ten for that year. What year, exactly?
1998, 30 years from the founding of the company.
The CAO L’Anniversaire Maduro cigar was released, of course, as a follow up to the original cigar made to commemorate the event, the L’Anniversaire Cameroon. The initial release was popular enough to merit a follow up, and it’s always such a pleasure when the sequel is even better than the original instead of a letdown that’s just chasing the earlier high.
Inside the dark and oily Connecticut Broadleaf wrapper, you’ll find a choice blend of Nicaraguan tobaccos that deliver splendid flavors of espresso, honey, pepper. The cigar also carries a “steely undertone” within its smoke, which could be a good thing or not depending on your tastes. The cigar is also box-pressed, so you get a more even flavor profile, longer burn, and perhaps cooler smoke due to the open-ish mouth shape forced by cigars with straight edges at the head. It’s a fine way to celebrate CAO or any occasion you choose.
