For those who know whiskey, Buffalo Trace is a name that really stands out in the U.S. There are so many spirits coming out of the distillery in Kentucky that the company was named Tasting Panel Magazine’s Distillery of the Year at the 2020 San Francisco World Spirits Competition. This was the result of an absolute pile of medal wins, including Double Golds for spirits under the Eagle Rare, William Larue, Thomas H. Handy, Stagg Jr., and Elmer T. Lee brands.
So naturally, after all these delicious liquors were paired up with cigars countless times, it was time to see what the company could do with its own in-house tobacco blend.
Buffalo Trace cigars are made by General Cigar in Santiago, Dominican Republic. This operation also makes a number of lines for other premium cigar marks like Macanudo, Cohiba, Partagas, and La Gloria Cubana. It’s a great choice for a premium name like Buffalo Trace. And if you thought the cigar blenders would mail it in – think again. This one isn’t just a simple Dominican stick with a Buffalo Trace band on it; it’s an artful blend that could easily stand on its own out in our crowded industry.
The long-fillers include Nicaraguan tobacco as well as barrel-aged Piloto Cubano. As you might expect, this is where Buffalo Trace cigars get some of their distinctive flavors. This blend is then bound with Brazilian arapiraca leaf and is finished off with an Ecuador Sumatra wrapper for an exotic flavor.
What an interesting stick you get here! Buffalo Trace cigars are combining a lot of different flavors for a ton of complexity, much like a high-quality bourbon. But it’s all done with a master blender’s palate so that everything can come together in the right way. Instead of one-note dominating the smoke, you get lush cedar, vanilla, nuts, and spice all in their proper place, making for a really enjoyable cigar.
It goes without saying that this one could be paired with some whiskey, like a bit of that Stagg Jr. Kentucky Straight bourbon, but you can choose whatever brand you like.
