A.J. Fernandez has numerous cigars rated 90+ by Cigar Aficionado (CA) under his belt. He also holds the 2019 Cigar of the Year win from CA, and his blends have ranked in the CA Top 25 Cigars of the Year multiple times. The dude has an epic work ethic, and he’s patient. When you combine a hard worker with a patient mind that sees the big picture, chances are that big things are coming down the pipeline. We know big things have been arriving year after year, so that makes the anticipation even greater as we wait to see what A.J. has in store for cigar lovers.
Ave Maria Immaculata cigars are not, as the name suggests, of Immaculate Conception. Unless someone up there put the seed into A.J.’s mind for the cigar, but how likely is that? Also, that’s not really Immaculate Conception, but what do we know? We’re just here for the cigars.
Ave Maria Immaculata cigars use a calm Ecuadorian Connecticut wrapper to hold an expertly chosen bundle of aged Cuban-seed Nicaraguan long-fillers. The leaf is honey brown and glimmering and has two bands. The primary upper band displays a Templar Knight in great detail with gold, red, white, and dark blue colors. The lower band is platinum-colored with the word “Immaculata.” The presentation is stunning—and at risk of sounding like a castle geek—it’s downright noble.
On the cold draw, we’re getting caramel and sweetness. The first third has some pepper and spice along with cedar, caramel, and creamy notes. During the second third, the pepper and spice hang way back as the cedar and creamy flavors rev way up. The final third shows us a return of some pepper and a continuation of the cedar and cream.
When all is said and done, these are smooth, mild-medium cigars. They are perfect for anyone who loves mellower smokes, newer smokers looking to sample something great, and fans of the Ave Maria brand who have faith that A.J.’s blends will get you where you need to be.
Please enjoy Ave Maria Immaculata cigars at your leisure.
