The blend is the creation of Carlos Fuente Sr.,patriarch of the family. In 2006,his son, Carlos Fuente Jr., made the Don Carlos Edición de Aniversario to celebrate the 30 years of Don Carlos cigars. He swapped out the Cameroon wrapper for the Dominican shade-grown leaf he uses on Fuente Fuente OpusX.
He also boosted the cigars power considerably. The result is a tremendously intense and complex blend - - - -." Don Carlos Edicion de Aniversario was chosen as Best of the Best by Robb Report(June 2007). “- - - - wrapped in aged Dominican tobaccos from Château de la Fuente.
The rich and oily wrapper belies the idea that a dark leaf produces a harshly strong taste; it offers a sugary-chocolate flavor. The taste of the Dominican binder and filler blend is rich and spicy, like that of a New York strip steak without sauce, and the tobacco is so well-aged and -rolled that during our blind testing, I tried to tap off an inch-long ash and it would not budge.”
The Fuente family has been making Arturo Fuente Don Carlos cigars since 1976, four years longer than they’ve even made cigars in the Dominican Republic. Like all multi-generational cigar companies, they love to celebrate milestones with special edition cigars. The Don Carlos Edición de Aniversario is a way to celebrate 30 years of a beloved blend, which was in the top 5 cigars of 2008, as ranked by Cigar Aficionado.
The blend was originally the creation of Carlos Fuente Sr., patriarch of the family (Arturo Fuente, his father, passed many years ago). In 2006, his son, Carlos Fuente Jr., made the Don Carlos Edición de Aniversario by putting his own twist on the classic blend: he swapped out the Don Carlos African Cameroon wrapper for a Dominican shade-grown leaf. This is the same leaf that has worked so well on the Fuente Fuente OpusX, and the result is a tremendously intense and complex blend.
The Edición de Aniversario’s rich and oily wrapper proves that a dark leaf doesn’t have to produce a harshly strong taste – one of the core flavors is pure milk chocolate - while the Dominican binder and filler blend is rich and spicy. And to show how fine the construction is, tap your ash once it hits an inch or so – you’ll find that it won’t budge a bit.
The Don Carlos Edición de Aniversario is a fitting tribute to one of the cigar world’s most famous cigar makers.
