Once upon a time in Europe, there was no smoking, really. No pipes, no cigarettes, and certainly no cigars. The reason was simple: there was no tobacco! All the tobacco was in a far-off land that was almost totally unknown to Europeans.
All that changed in 1492.
Italian explorer Christopher Columbus made landfall in the Bahamas on October 12th of that year, and the rest is history. Tobacco is a rich part of that history. It was used by natives in a variety of ways, including smoking by groups of people in shared pipes. Eventually, people in the New World got hooked and sent their beloved leaf back to the Old World, where still more people got hooked. Demand for tobacco skyrocketed and here we are, with a cigar to commemorate Columbus’s historic voyages.
A.J. Fernandez New World Connecticut cigars feature a Connecticut wrapper (duh), a Mexican San Andrés binder, and a filler blend from Brazil and Nicaragua. They’re also available in Oscuro and Puro Especial versions. When lit, this highly-rated cigar fills the air with the smell of mild cedar and leather, with a hint of lemon peel. It’s a blend of tobaccos from all over the New World of the Americas and showcases some fairly interesting flavors. If only the first smoke hounds could see us now – how jealous would they be?
Damn. We are so spoiled!
