AJ Fernandez Dias de Gloria
The AJ Fernandez Dias de Gloria cigar is built to recall a time that everyone in the industry seems to recall fondly: the glory days of the Cuban cigar industry. Many cigars have been created with a focus on a similar flavor profile, but not all have the same pedigree. For Abdel J. Fernandez, it’s a callback to his own home country, which he knows as well as any.
AJ was born in San Luis, Cuba, and learned about tobacco and cigar making from his father and uncle at a young age. They were fine teachers, already full of generational knowledge in the industry, and AJ soaked it all in like a tobacco plant taking up the rain. It’s no surprise that in the decades to come he would go on to create a wealth of 90+ rated cigars and world-class smokes that have appeared on Cigar Aficionado’s Top 25 Cigars of the Year list.
AJ Fernandez Dias de Gloria cigars are Nicaraguan puros, which is a common choice for blenders seeking Cubanesque flavors. Using tobacco from his farms in Estelí, he’s added a special touch – extensively aged and mature leaf. Some of the tobacco in the Dias de Gloria blend has laid by for seven years or more, waiting for the perfect moment to become part of something special.
The wrapper on the AJ Fernandez Dias de Gloria cigar is a sun-grown beauty, with irresistible caramel color. Toast the foot and take a draw, and you’ll get what most would consider a decent take on classic Cuban flavors: the red pepper kick, the cedar and nuts core, the slight “twang” that some might describe as sourdough or barnyard. The number of smokers who can recall a classic Cuban cigar has dwindled down to a very small number at this point, and so our focus is really on whether the smoke is a quality flavor profile or not. And as usual, AJ delivers a tasty smoke.
Pre-Castro Cuban cigars are only a memory, but a few blends on the market give you an opportunity to think on time gone by. That’s good enough for us.
