Pelo de Oro cigar tobacco is hard to cultivate, dies easy, and the plants barely produce enough leaf to make it worthwhile. It’s a perfect strain for a company built around small batch blends of rare tobacco, right? Of course!
Rafael Nodal, president and co-founder of Boutique Blends, which produces Aging Room cigars, is always on the lookout for tobacco like that. In his own words, he explains that he views the company “as a laboratory for creating unique and exciting blends with rare and hard-to-find tobaccos” and he states that, “It does not get more rare or harder-to-find than Pelo de Oro."
So, is Nodal out in the field making sure that those fragile leaves keep growing? Well, not exactly, the Aging Room Pelo de Oro cigar is made by A.J. Fernandez, owner of Tabacalera A.J. Fernandez Cigars de Nicaragua. Famous for beloved blends like Last Call, Man O’ War, and Diesel, this is his first collaboration with Rafael Nodal. It’s a limited run, but if Aging Room’s Pelo de Oro does well, we could see more from the duo.
This Pelo de Oro Cuban-seed tobacco is grown in Nicaragua, as are the other leaves used in the blend, making this a delicious Nicaraguan puro. It’s got a dark wrapper and is topped off with a pigtail cap for easy preparation. Light it up and take in the distinctive PDO flavors of wood, dark chocolate, fruit, and a eucalyptus. After all that trouble, the reward with Pelo de Oro is its signature flavor. If you’ve never tried it, put it on your Cigar Bucket List.
