You might know the Aganorsa Leaf Aniversario Corojo cigar by its birth name, the “Casa Fernandez Aniversario Corojo.” No matter which way you encounter it, the blend is quite enjoyable. Aganorsa VP Terence Reilly calls it “ultra-premium,” so this is definitely the good stuff from a company that really knows how to make great tobacco.
People who know tobacco know that this isn’t just hype. Eduardo Fernández, the founder of Aganorsa Leaf, was a growers grower. And so when he celebrates the beginnings of his company with this 35th Aniversario blend, he’s really celebrating the birth of an approach to tobacco cultivation.
He wasn’t just planting, watering, and hoping for the best.
This man was an artisan, scientist, and hands-in-the-dirt farmer all rolled into one. When he assembled his team, he started with respected Cuban agronomists who had formerly worked at the highest levels of Cubatabaco (the Castro regime’s state tobacco company). These guys grabbed their best seed and got to work in the soil of Nicaragua.
What they made is now known to the world as Aganorsa Leaf – a name synonymous with high-quality Nicaraguan tobacco fit for a king, or at least cigar lovers who feel like kings when they light one of these stogies up in their backyard.
Nicaragua has some extraordinary success stories, and the competition is world-class. And yet, Aganorsa manages to stand shoulder to shoulder with companies like Padrón, Oliva, My Father, and others who call Nicaragua home and who are continuing to fuel the nation’s rise to the top of the cigar game.
Aganorsa Leaf Aniversario Corojo cigars are part of an annual release tradition that goes back quite a few years at this point. Each year, the company manages to outdo itself and create a blend worthy of the name. Now, the cigar has a new look but is made with the same uncompromising standards as we’ve come to expect from Eduardo Fernández and his team of purists.
The Corojo, as you might expect, is the classic Cuban entry into the Aniversario family. The punchy leaf has adorned countless legendary blends, and is always in season, no matter what year it is. This time around, it’s the Corojo ‘99 that got the nod, and that holds in a delicious blend of Nicaraguan leaf that is smooth and flavorful. Notes of pepper (of course) provide pops of excitement while a leathery core shows flashes of semi-sweet chocolate chips at times. The traditional flavors are there, offering the satisfying experience that Cuban tobacco men have been creating for decades.
We raise a glass (and a lighter), once again, to Aganorsa Leaf and the team who made it happen.
