Free Cigar Review #2

Review by Aaron Jackson on May 02, 2007

This was one of four free cigars I received from CigarsDirect.com earlier this year. The construction was beautiful, the draw was wonderful with lots and lots of smoke. The ash was long, white and tight. The cigar started to split about midway through, but caused no major problems. The flavor was tobacco and spice with a tiny hint of licorice (this could just be me). Overall, it was a very good cigar, but given the hype I wasnt as impressed as I expected to be. Still a very good smoke though.

Sampler Review - very good, but over-hyped

Review by Andy Beasley on April 12, 2007

Near-perfect construction and draw, as is to be expected. Good, strong leather and cedar flavor. At first it had a black-walnut finish that changed to a nutty-anise flavor after the halfway mark. I enjoyed it down to a nub, but I still feel that Fuente products tend to be overpriced and overhyped. I can buy a number of equally good cigars for less money. If you catch these on sale, theyre definitely worth buying, but dont pay full price.

The Don for a reason

Review by Mark Klein on April 04, 2007

Arturo Fuentes Don Carlos line burns evenly and smokes like a complex cup of Indonesian coffee with a hint of sweetness in it. Fairly rich tobacco flavors, though medium bodied and smooth, predominate but the little hints of spice and fruit make it interesting. An easy draw is part of the deal.

Arturo Fuente Don Carlos Robusto

Review by The_Stogemiester on March 23, 2007

Arturo Fuente Don Carlos Robusto - 5x50 Appereance and Construction (14 of 15 points possible) A delicious oily tan brown wrapper that has minimal vein and some decent tooth. The stick was nice and solid with a well finished cap. Flavor (17 of 25 points possible) The flavors are sharp cedar, spice, hay and a mettalic licorice flavor on the the finish. At halfway the cigar is a solid medium body with little to no complexity. The flavors are still sharp cedar, some spice and a nasty mettalicness on the finish. About the only change in flavor was a slight nuttiness I picked up at the 3/4 mark. The cigar was not bitter or young, just a very sharp mettalic taste that dominated the cigar and ruined it for me. I lade the cigar down with about 3/4 left. Smoking Characteristics (23 of 25 points possible) The draw on this cigar is nice and easy, the aroma is also pleasant with toasty tobacco and a baked goodness. The ash hung on for 2 1/2s before it fell off. The cigar burned pretty straight for the most part with no relights or touch ups, just a hard time lighting it and some crooked burning in the begining that the cigar straightend out itself. Overall Impression (20 of 35 points possible) I was unimpressed by this cigar, it almost had no complexity and was almost one dimensional. The metallic taste was overwelming at times Overall score - 74

Somewhat Disappointed

Review by Matt Kerntke on March 16, 2007

I had heard good things about this line. Overall, the smoke was quite good with on major problem: the wrapper cracked on me and started to come off during the smoke. Other than that, it was a lovely medium to full smoke with heavy earthy notes, a touch of saltiness, and a spiciness toward the 1/2 way mark. Will definitely have to try again and just hope that I happened to got a fluke this time.

Fuente Don

Review by Anthony Gutierrez on March 14, 2007

Great appearance, good pre-smoke flavors. Medium bodied, spicy character, kinda flat. Had a great beat and was easy to dance to, I give it a 7. Note: Why do all of badkarmas cigars fall apart?

Don Carlos Robusto

Review by Ed from CA on March 12, 2007

This is a nice medium-bodied cigar with lots of thick smoke. Slightly sweet with hints of caramel, spice, and earth. This cameroon wrapped beauty is very much like a parejo-shaped Hemingway, excellent construction as is par with Fuente. Perfect for any time of day!

Fuente

Review by Buddy Wagner on March 11, 2007

This was a great smoking stick with only a minor complaint. I traveled with this smoke and was able to enjoy it out on the pation overlooking the lake in a slight rain. This stick was medium for my tast and had a nice warm cedar taste mixed with spice. It had a great even draw and smooth transitions through the flavor. The complaint comes from having to re-light several times, which I will attribute to the humidity that I was smoking in more than the cigar.

The Don

Review by bradley russell on March 11, 2007

I thought this cigar was pretty good. Medium body, stayed together very well and had a pretty good flavor. It was the perfect size. A bit harsh in the beginning for me, but finished very well, I didnt want to stop smoking it

Not Too Shabby

Review by Dave on March 10, 2007

This was a decent cigar. It burned a little hotter than I like but if I had let it rest in my humidor a bit longer, it might have been better. Decent smoke volume lets you really get a good taste. Thats a good thing as this is a pretty tasty cigar. I will have to try one or two more singles to see if they always burn too hot and uneven. If not, this is a stick Ill be buying a box of.

mmm mmmm good

Review by abates on March 10, 2007

Smell was deep, dark..Once lit, a lot of spice came through in the flavor but it was far from overpowering. It actually went quite well with the Amstel Light I was drinking. Burn was slightly inconsistent and it went even in the middle but soon after evened out without my assistance. Towards the nub, the flavor got a little bitter, but in all honesty I probably smoked it down way too far. Good evening smoke!

Fuente DC robusto, sampler review

Review by C. Lewallen on March 09, 2007

March 4, 8am, w/ coffee As expected, near-perfect construction. Before lighting, draws easy with slight pull. First draws - medium amount of smoke, nice peppery, toasty flavor. Medium strength, possibly a little heavy for a morning cigar but still nice complement to coffee. Sturdy dark gray ash, even burn, no problems with flaking, still firm when tapping off first 1-1/4. At mid-point of cigar, the continued even burn & sturdy ash are obvious indicators of this cigars expert craftsmanship, expected from a Fuente product. Holding smoke in mouth presents no sign of harshness, proving the tobacco has been properly chosen and aged prior to hitting retail shelves. Last half of cigar, the flavor becomes more robust, tangy, yet still no harshness present. I never felt the need to grab a sip of coffee, and very nearly neglected my beverage, as I enjoyed this smooth cigar. Absolutely no problems with burn and ash; the lighter remained tucked away. While this proved to be a good choice with morning coffee, Im guessing this cigar would be an excellent companion in the evening, enough pepper present to hold company with an adult beverage. Quality, consistency, proper mixing and aging - all hallmarks of a proven product by Fuente.

Not as good as I was expecting.

Review by Cpoling on March 08, 2007

This being a Fuente I was expecting a little more. The construction was loose and the outer wrapper was cracked when it arrived. It burned even but rather fast. It is a very mild smoke with a slight pepper taste. I prefer a bit stonger smoke but if you like a mild cigar with very little after taste than this one is for you.

Surprise

Review by James Sainsbury on March 08, 2007

Nice mild to medium morning cigar. Easy draw nice burn and great construction. Smoother with a hint of spice and a strong finish. I enjoyed this cigar which is surprising because I lean more toward the fuller bodied, spice cigars. Nice smoke.

Review by Badkarma on March 07, 2007

I really like this stick. The abundant and complex flavors were a pleasure. I would have rated it higher had it not started to come apart less than half way through.

Nice mid-day cigar

Review by West LA Martin on March 06, 2007

I liked this cigar. Nice construction and look, good draw and consistent flavor throughout the smoke until about the final third when it got a little hot and the wrapper started to unravel a bit. Fairly even burn with a nice ash. However, I think that at $8.80/cigar (box price) its about 25% over priced - there are cigars as good or better in the $4-$6 range, e.g., the Gran Habana 3 Siglos (if you havent tried one of these yet, go find one and smoke, awesome smoke and value) and the Fonseca Vintage come to mind. But as we all know, it all comes down to personal taste.

Nice construction, perfect draw. Slight veiny wrapper. A really good smooth, flavorfull smoke. A bit too mild and one dimensional for me. A little pepper and a nice DR tobacco flavor. overall a nice smoke.

Solid

Review by A. Eppert on March 04, 2007

Smooth, mild and very even burn. Excellent choice for a post round of golf with a good beer - as how I decided to sample it. Excellent cigar for those who want to start sampling, but are not sure about the spicer options.

Go to Cigar

Review by Jeff Kinat on March 03, 2007

From the first look at this cigar I could tell that it had lived up to the Fuente name. It was flawlessly constructed with a firm ash that held on half way through the cigar. The taste was super smooth, with subtle undertones. At first it was slightly sweet but not like a sugar tipped cigar. As I continued smoking it I could detect a coffee finish. What a great cigar! As the cigar was finishing I only hoped that there were more in my humidor.

Almost and Opus

Review by Richard Plasencia on January 13, 2007

The Don Carlos Robusto, let me start over, i started out the night smoking a Padron 1964 Principe, i hadnt eaten all day and i couldnt finish it, i went back to my humidor and pulled out the Don Carlos, as soon as that wrapper hit my lips with hints of fruit all was right in the world, classic fuente construction, draw, and flavor, smooth sweet and full flavor not full strength, i think its the closet thing to an opus x without having to pay that price
