When the Cuban Embargo went into effect in 1961, most cigar manufacturers outside of Cuba were ill-prepared for the loss of their supply of Cuban tobacco. A few, like Fuente, had stockpiled reserves with foresight as they watched the political landscape and anticipated an embargo. Most, however, were left scrambling for good tobacco, and the pickings were slim.
The shortage of quality leaf left an opportunity for Joya de Nicaragua. The company was making quality smokes using tobacco from Nicaragua. The word began to get out that the Joya cigars were delicious premium smokes. As a result, Joya de Nicaragua became the leading Nicaraguan brand sold in the United States throughout the decade of the 70s.

The Joya Antaño celebrates the success of those years. The word “Antaño” means “yesteryear,” and brings back the power of those long-ago days. This is a Nicaragua puro. The filler is cultivated on various farms throughout the country.
While the binder is nondescript, the wrapper is a well-respected Habano Criollo leaf that is fermented into a rich Maduro. The blend of these high-quality Nicaraguan tobaccos is a stogie that delivers thick, billowy clouds of smoke. The flavors that burst from this cigar with a medium-full body include robust leather with notes of citrus, cedar, cocoa, licorice, oak and enough peppery spice to provide a touch of zing.
