Manny Iriarte wasn’t always a high-end designer for one of the world’s finest cigar companies. In fact, when he was young, he was known for his accomplishments in the water. On the Cuban national swim team, he was a decorated athlete. Many people would have stopped there. That’s enough fame for one lifetime, right?
But Manny had an eye for beauty, and that’s the root of the Arturo Fuente The OpusX Society by Manny Iriarte collection. His hobby of photography was hard to pursue in Cuba where equipment and supplies were scarce. The striking imagery available in a country that had changed so much over the years was more than enough fuel for the soul of an artist, and Manny’s images were captivating. In the confining Cuban system, however, there was only so much he could do. For the open waters of opportunity, Manny had to make his way to America.
His work in the states eventually landed him work as a photographer in the ad industry, especially for tobacco and cigar companies. As a Cuban, it seems that tobacco was his destiny. His relationship with Carlos Fuente Jr. developed over the years, ultimately giving him the chance to design many high-end limited edition accessories to celebrate Fuente milestones. These included watches, humidors, lighters, and a number of other artworks. It became clear that there wouldn’t be one-off pieces. Instead, they were part of a larger collection growing all the time.
