Excalibur cigars have earned a reputation as one of the best anywhere since their development and release in the 1970s. The maker, Hoyo de Monterrey, established itself early on as a producer of premium cigars back in Cuba. Once the trade embargo put an end to the cigar and tobacco industry on that island, operations moved to Honduras thanks to the smuggling of some prized seeds tucked into a diplomatic pouch.
Hand-rolled, Excaliburs are comprised of the descendants of those outstanding Cuban-seeded tobaccos grown. Many are made in the Dominican Republic, others in Honduras. Wrappers are of the finest Connecticut shadeleaf tobaccos, lending an ineffable smoothness to these medium- to full-bodied smokes.
The makers of Excalibur pride themselves on the craftsmanship inherent in the fine cedar boxes in which the cigars are packed, transported, and sold. There is nothing like fine Spanish cedar for developing and maintaining the exquisite taste and aroma of a truly fine cigar.
Excaliburs are fine traditional cigars with have much to offer both experienced and uninitiated cigar smokers. The Excalibur 1066, combining both the legendary King Arthur and the factual Battle of Hasting in 1066, offers a unique smoking experience. In a departure from the usual, the 1066 incorporates the famous Connecticut broadleaf as the binder, a very tasty Cameroon wrapper, and a filler blended from choice Honduran, Nicaraguan, and Dominican tobaccos. As a result, the 1066 is a bit milder than its siblings in this line.
Of course, there are other Excaliburs in this family that simply have to be sampled, one at a time, to get the full benefit of the range of tastes.
