Drew Estate's Liga Privada blends and cigar lines can be a bit confusing, so we'll keep things clear here. The original 94-rated blend was called Liga Privada No. 9, and it charted at #10 on Cigar Aficionado's Best Cigars of the Year list in 2015. The T52 was the first follow-up blend in the Liga family to hit the market.
While the original No. 9 featured a fermented Connecticut broadleaf Oscuro wrapper, the T52 swapped it out for some Connecticut Habano sun-grown tobacco, a different varietal, if you will. The result was a different flavor profile and an intriguing departure for people who were already looking for something close to Liga Privada No. 9, but different.
The original blend was complex and dark, with the flavors of chocolate, dark-roasted coffee, and stone fruit. The cigars in this Drew Estate Liga Privada T52 Sampler, on the other hand, tasted more of cedar, and leather, and had a slight citrus finish.
Liga had lightened up a bit.
Core tobaccos remained the same, though, keeping the T52 and No. 9 as close siblings. The long-filler blend is still Nicaraguan and Honduran leaf, and the binder is that famous Brazilian Mata Fina tobacco that took the aromatic smoke of the No.9 to the next level. The final result is a hearty smoke that is full of flavor and full strength, just what we've all come to expect from Liga cigars.
