Ecuador

The rich soil of Ecuador can be used to raise a number of different tobacco seeds, but the most prized among them is the Ecuadorian Sumatra leaf, used as a bold, flavorful wrapper.

Cameroon

Toasty, woody, and spicy – these are the words used to describe the delicate Cameroon wrapper. A lovely shade of red, this toothy (i.e. bumpy with rich oil deposits) tobacco leaf is used to give cigars exotic flavor and aroma.

Indonesia

Indonesia may have birthed the Sumatra wrapper, but Ecuador perfected it. Still, some cigars feature Indonesia-grown Sumatra wrappers.

Brazil

Brazil isn’t a leading tobacco region, but its leaf has made it into one of the best cigars of all time (Drew Estate’s Liga Privada No. 9 features a Brazilian Mata Fina binder), so it’s worth learning about. The stalk-cut leaf grown in Brazil is used to make maduro and even oscuro tobacco. It’s got a potent earthy aroma and smooth, rich flavor.

Mexico

Other nations come ahead of Mexico when it comes to cigar tobacco production, but there’s just something special about a Mexican cigar with a San Andres negro wrapper. Sun-grown, bold, chocolatey – it’s a tough leaf that’s often stalk-cut and subject to long fermentation periods to turn it into rich, flavorful maduro. A number of top-rated Mexican cigars balance this potent wrapper with a filler and binder blend that can stand up to its robust profile.

America
