Heberto Padilla was a man known for speaking his mind. The Cuban national poetry prize winner spoke so loudly that the dictator Fidel Castro put him under house arrest. Padilla published Fuera del Juego in 1968, containing poems critical of Castro. The regime ultimately imprisoned and tortured Padilla for his message, forcing some recantation out of him. At that point, it was enough. The poet then moved to America and lived out the remainder of his life in glory as a professor and free-speech hero.

The original blend produced by Heberto’s son Ernesto was a Nicaraguan puro. The Golden Bear blend changes things up a bit. We still enjoy the Nicaraguan criollo and Corojo tobacco that made the first release such a spicy pleasure. But now, we get a handsome homegrown Connecticut wrapper to finish things off. The resulting flavor profile is balanced with leather, cedar, and fresh cream notes. It’s an excellent combination that’s highly smokable.
