Oliva 5-Star Sampler #3 Description
The Oliva cigar family survived three revolutions and numerous other adversities, all in the name of lining your humidor with top-notch smoke. Overcoming severe obstacles seems to be a common theme with a number of these multi-generational cigar families. Like the Olivas, those that came out the other side are noteworthy, as they navigated both industry adversity and that of civil wars and much, much more.
In the Oliva 5-Star Sampler #3, we have five of Oliva’s top offerings in one place. This is an exclusive gathering of 5-star cigars from one of the most successful cigar families operating out of Nicaragua today, and you’re invited. Come on in and see what makes the Oliva Cigar Co. so celebrated.
The Oliva 5-Star Sampler #3 contains one each of the following cigars.
Oliva Serie G
Getting things started, we have the 91-rated box-pressed Oliva Serie G. This toro holds a cloak-and-dagger family blend of Nicaraguan Habano long-fillers that go to work with a Cuban-seed Habano Nicaraguan binder. Completing the party preparations is an aged, dark African Cameroon wrapper.
The medium-bodied Oliva Serie G starts with a wave of sweetness and creamy chocolate. Travel down the stick a bit, and notes of coffee, cedar, and leather have arrived. Toward the end, the creamy chocolate notes escalate along with a sweet tobacco flavor.
This smooth number is a go-to BBQ cigar. No BBQs on the calendar? Fear not, for this smoke is an excellent excuse for an impromptu grill night.
Oliva Master Blends III
Next up in the Oliva 5-Star Sampler #3, we have the Oliva Master Blends III. As the name suggests, this is the third Oliva Master Blend. These blends are limited to 15,000 boxes. What happens is the Oliva team utilizes high-quality tobaccos that are not bountiful enough for a production cigar. This is excellent tobacco though very small in quantity.
The 92-rated Master Blends III combines a Nicaraguan blend of Habano-seed, Ligero tobaccos with a succulent, oily Connecticut broadleaf sun-grown wrapper. The result is a full-bodied cigar that delivers notes of earth, spice, cream, coffee, and brown sugar. Sounds tasty, right? Indeed it is. Just make sure to enjoy a good meal before taking your lighter to this rare cigar.
Oliva Serie O
The 94-rated Oliva Serie O is one of the blends that helped put Oliva on the map. In addition to the excellent rating, this stick was named one of Cigar Aficionado’s Top 25 Cigars of 2013. Even more impressive—Oliva has secured a top 25 spot each year since 2005, with the exception of 2015. A sun-grown habano leaf covers this Nicaraguan puro. Just below the leaf is a Habano binder that cradles Nicaraguan long-fillers grown in Estelí, Condega, and Jalapa Valley using Habano seeds.
After you get the medium to full-bodied Oliva Serie O burning, a rush of cedar, earth, and spiciness hits your palate. These flavors continue down the cigar, joined by some sweetness. In the end, the cedar takes center stage with coffee and nutty notes serving as supporting acts.
Oliva Serie V
Next in the Oliva 5-Star Sampler #3, we have the 95-rated Oliva Serie V, named 2017’s #3 Cigar of the Year by Cigar Aficionado. This Nicaraguan puro also goes by the name “Ligero Especial.” These top-shelf sticks use an uber-fermented Jalapa Valley Ligero, which rests snug in a Nicaraguan binder. A Habano sun-grown wrapper finishes things off, and this stick is ready for the big time. Once lit, smooth and creamy smoke lines your palate with a lush experience of chocolate, coffee, spice, and sweetness.
Oliva Connecticut Reserve
Wrapping things up is the Oliva Connecticut Reserve. A gorgeous, silky Ecuadorian Connecticut leaf covers this stick and contributes a creamy component to the experience. Just below this wrapper, a Nicaraguan binder cradles aged Nicaraguan long-fillers. Once this mellow to medium-bodied Robusto is burning, you’re hit with the blast of spice you’d expect in a Nicaraguan. Flavors of cream, pepper, cedar, sweetness, and nuts aren’t far behind. Keep smoking, and leather enters the mix while the nutty flavor gains power, and the cedar and pepper notes keep chugging along. The grand finale is that of leather, coffee, and nuts.
The Oliva Connecticut Reserve is a great cigar to smoke outback with your morning coffee.
