My Father from My Father cigars was the #3 cigar of 2009 on Cigar Aficionado’s Top 25 Cigars of the Year list. It earned an outstanding 94 points and was loved for its rich and meaty flavor profile, which offered notes of leather, coffee bean, and a hint of sweetness. This cigar’s Ecuadorian Habano Rosado wrapper and Cuban-seed Nicaraguan filler blend from the Garcia plantations has graced so many fine cigars from the company that it has since become world-famous.
But back in the year of this cigar’s release in 2008, things were different. At that time, the brand was totally new, and people knew My Father cigars founder Don Pepin Garcia mainly for his work creating blends for other companies like Tatuaje. That would all change over the coming decade, as he refined his offerings and ultimately created not one but two Cigar of the Year award-winning cigars (La Flor de las Antillas and My Father Le Bijou 1922).
This cigar, however, was the one that marked the formal use of the My Father brand name. It isn’t a reference to Don Pepin’s father. Instead, his son Jaime Garcia created a blend of his own and chose this as the name. Don Pepin went one giant step farther and named the whole company after it. Of course, the blend was well worthy of such a tribute, and My Father cigars is now a household name in premium smokes. This blend marks one of the major milestones along the way for Don Pepin and the Garcias to become the cigar legends they are now.
