Have you ever wondered who the cigar smokers are who can buy Gurkha’s $1,000 cigar (the His Majesty’s Reserve, infused with Louis XIII Cognac)? It’s people with status. Or at least money to burn. For so many of Gurkha’s outlandish offerings, the intended market isn’t any of us. Instead, it’s international jet-setters, aristocrats and oligarchs, and the wealthy global elite.
So what’s the Gurkha Status cigar about? Who is this one for? Is there any one left to fit the bill (and pay for it?)
Well, this one is still made with really fine tobacco, but it’s for you and me to smoke. It’s luxury within reach, essentially. Good leaf from good soil, blended by people who know how to twist up a cigar that’s worthy of kicking back with after a hard day’s work for an hour or so of blowing smoke.
Open the lid on a box of these and you’ll first see frosted tubes keeping each of your new beauties safe. Pull one open and enjoy the mild cedar aroma coming off the Gurkha Status. It’s not the type of cigar to knock you over – this one is more about refined quality.
It comes in both Connecticut shade and broadleaf maduro wrappers, with Dominican binder and long-filler tobacco inside. The smoke feels like it has mild to medium body, and offers some fairly classic flavors. For the Connecticut shade wrapper, you’ll get creamy and smooth notes of cedar and a little spice. The broadleaf version puts out earthy cocoa flavors, accompanied by dark cherry and cinnamon. Tasty little blends with a big name – coming soon to a humidor near you.
