In the early 2000s, when Gurkha was just getting off the ground, a number of blends helped it finally generate enough momentum to achieve lift-off. Among these was a cigar called the Master Select, which earned 91-point ratings from Cigar Aficionado. It was praised for its flavorful smoke displaying a combination of notes that included creamy cocoa, nuts, and spice.
Surprisingly, many years later, when Gurkha Owner Kaizad Hansotia asked Fidel Olivas about the blend, he still had a supply of the right tobaccos to recreate it. So, here we have the rebirth of the Gurkha Master Select Original Vintage Blend (aka the “Gurkha Master Select OBV” cigar).
OBV cigars are hand-rolled in Nicaragua, still under the direction of cigar maker Fidel Olivas, who formerly worked with the Plasencias at the Joya de Nicaragua factory. Sales of the original blend were only put on pause due to delays in production, so once the time was right again, the Gurkha Master Select cigar could come back to life.
Outside, there’s a handsome brown Ecuadorian Habano wrapper, which conceals a Honduran binder, and then a Nicaraguan and Dominican filler blend. When lit, this medium-strength smoke puts out a classic Nicaraguan note of white pepper, and then also tastes like dark roasted coffee bean and cedar. It’s a quality blend and one that offers a reliably enjoyable experience.
