George Rico is now the top guy at Gran Habano, though he’s far from the first of the Rico family to stain their hands with tobacco. The Ricos started growing dark tobacco in Cuba in the early 1920s. The cigar knowledge acquired was passed down from father to son all the way to George, who is the fourth generation.
In 2003 George and his father Guillermo launched the boutique Gran Habano value brand. They create and produce their blends at their factory in Danlí, Honduras, including one of George’s own lines, G.A.R. Opium cigars. Sure, the Gar cigars are far from George’s first blend, but they are the first to bear his initials.
G.A.R. Opium cigars are value-priced premiums, medium to full in body. They are Nicaraguan puros dressed in a caramel brown hybrid Nicaraguan habano Corojo wrapper. G.A.R. Opium cigars deliver notes of wood, leather, and coffee. From the first puff to the nub, you’ll be shaking your head trying to figure out how a cigar of such high quality is priced so low.
