The E.P. Carrillo Core Plus Natural is an extension of one of the original blends that launched the brand. Without high quality cigars like this, Ernesto Perez-Carrillo might never have gotten a foothold in the industry with his self-named company, and we might never have seen the Cigar of the Year winning Encore Majestic or the highly rated and thoroughly enjoyable La Historia, Elencos, or Selección Oscuro blends. When you’re building, you’ve got to go one brick at a time, and the Core Plus Natural is an evolution of one of the early keystones en la Casa de Carrillo.
You’ll find two different versions on the market, Natural and Maduro.
The first is the Natural. This cigar uses well-aged tobacco to create its satisfying flavor profile. The Ecuadorian Sumatra wrapper has been maturing for three years, and the Nicaraguan long-filler blend has taken two to five years to reach proper richness. The product is a medium to full strength cigar with flavors of sweet cream, coffee, chocolate, and spicy wood notes. Fans of the original core blends will find that this is an intriguing twist on a reliable old favorite.
The second version of the Core Plus cigar is a medium-strength Maduro beauty. You’ll find a Connecticut Broadleaf wrapper rolled around Nicaraguan filler leaf and an Ecuadorian binder. This one is not a cigar to sleep on. With a 92 rating, this little under the radar smoke actually squeaked onto the famous Cigar Aficionado Top 25 Cigars of the Year list at #23. There’s no real way to keep this one to yourself – the cat’s out of the bag now. It’s a super tasty chocolatey and nutty smoke with a nice foundation note of wood. The judges at Cigar Aficionado say it has “the ripe tobacco notes of a quintessential maduro.” If you’re a fan of mature leaf, be sure to order a few of these up for your smoking enjoyment – they’ve got it where it counts.
