What does “Luxus” mean? Well, in a few languages, the word simply means “luxury.” We imagine that’s what the company was going for, and they’ve nailed the mark in many of the ten (or so) blends offered under the Luxus line.
The cigars themselves feature extraordinarily rare tobacco in the form of a ten-year-old leaf that is only a few years younger than some of the decent whiskies in your liquor cabinet. This amount of aging goes well beyond what you will see on most cigars on the market, which hit the 1-5 mark and generally call it a day. Ten years brings you into special territory and offers a more mature, complex, and subtle profile to the smoke.
El Septimo’s team is based in Costa Rica, and their farms are carefully tended to produce the kind of tobacco you won’t just find everywhere else. While most of the U.S.-bound cigar market is dutifully working in Nicaragua, and achieving outstanding results, El Septimo has carved out their own niche in a country to the south. The weather and soil are different enough to give the leaf a recognizable character all its own.
So what is the Luxus cigar smoking experience like? Here’s how the company describes it:

So we’re not really in beginner territory. These cigars offer a lot for someone who has been smoking for a bit and is looking for a little something more. That’s not to say that there aren’t mild blends here, though. The line runs the gamut from small caliber to full bore.
El Septimo Luxus cigars are offered in many shapes and sizes. Right off the bat, you’ll probably notice the super short bullet-shaped cigars that make even Nubs look big. Isn’t it strange how the tiniest ones always stand out? Anyhow these full-strength 2-inch cigars like the Luxus Small Impact and X-Trem Shot are fun little blends that are meant to serve as a quick energizer to go with a morning espresso.

MILDER
• Flamingo Amarillo – mild, with plenty of aromatic smoke.
• Sabor Blue – “subtle but hearty.” Sabor Blue also features perhaps the darkest wrapper in the line.
• Long Shot – a clear note of pepper, but not super strong. “By the second and final third, the cigar begins to offer high-end, old-school notes of cedar and leather.” A reliably enjoyable smoke for longtime smokers.
• Excepcion White – “This sinfully delicious blend just oozes decadence.” With notes of oak, nougat, and cinnamon, this cigar is mild in strength but still full of flavor.
MEDIUM
• Short Dream Amarillo – this one has a “balance between aroma and strength,” and is “perfect for connoisseurs craving a great density.”
• Kolosso White – True to the name, Luxus Kolosso is a 6 x 60 big burner. El Septimo describes it as “an elegant, eclectic, and dense model that you’ll find hard to let go of.”
FULLER
• Bullet Blue – This cigar has medium to full strength. “Flavors appear as soon as the cigar is lit, giving short but intense moments of pleasure.” It’s not huge, but you get a lot out of smoking it.
• Rebelde Blue – This blend is more over the top than its siblings. El Septimo says it’s “a voluptuous and invigorating model for experienced connoisseurs.” If you want to dive in headfirst, start here.
• Precioso Pink – a ladies’ cigar for ladies who don’t always act like ladies. “This sexy beauty packs a punch,” the company says. The full description observes that “An explosion of spices meets your palate, giving the smallest of puffs a great complexity of roasted coffee, cedarwood, and spices, along with just the slightest after-shock of orange zest and raisin.” Oh, mama.
