Most major cigar brands have an origin story and heritage that influence their blends and branding. For many, the story follows the same basic formula: the [insert-brand-name] family grew tobacco and rolled cigars in Cuba since the early 1900s, but left the island after Castro took over and nationalized the tobacco industry and found a new home in the Dominican Republic/Nicaragua/Honduras/Miami where they started with nothing and rebuilt their family's cigar company into what it is today.

Well, Drew Estate's story is a little different. Jonathan Drew and his team weren't Cuban emigres steeped in cigar heritage. They were rough-and-tumble boys from Brooklyn in the '90s and hip-hop was their inspiration, which is why Drew Estate has made its name by doing things differently. They gained mainstream success among premium cigar brands by discovering a rare Connecticut Broadleaf wrapper that other manufacturers had avoided. It generally had a reputation for being too tough and thick to burn properly. But boy did everyone jump back on the Broadleaf train once Liga Privada took the world by storm.

A decade before they started slinging full-bodied Maduros for cigar enthusiasts and snobs alike, however, Drew Estate was making its name for something that cigar snobs would certainly not approve of flavored cigars.

Their ACID line was created for the common man. Jonathan and his buddies wanted to make cigars that anyone could enjoy, not just traditional cigar people. Their friends in Brooklyn smoked Black and Mild, White Owl, and Backwoods – and not always with just tobacco inside. But Jonathan Drew wanted to raise flavored cigars above this reputation and create complex infusions that would appeal to his friends and businessmen brokering deals in cigar lounges. And people loved what he created: ACID launched premium flavored cigars into the mainstream.

Like many cigar brands, Drew Estate wanted to do something special to recognize its heritage on its 20th anniversary in 2019. So, they broke the mold yet again to create a small-batch addition to the ACID line with extremely unconventional collectible humidors.

The Supreme Cigars are stored in one of seven unique humidors shaped like water towers and decorated by 5 of Brooklyn's leading graffiti artists. Jonathan Drew remembered looking out over the Brooklyn skyline while smoking cigars on his roof with his buddies and planning the release of the first ACID cigars and seeing brightly painted water towers in all directions. So to honor 20 years of ACID, he enlisted the help of the folks behind those spray-painted water towers to create mini replicas to hold some of the best ACID cigars yet. And he only created 1,750 sets of the seven water towers which means that the Kuba Arte is a rare treat indeed and a must-have collector's item.

How about the cigars themselves? The Drew Estate team pulled out all the stops making these beauties. They are some of the only ACID cigars to feature Drew Estate's signature Connecticut Broadleaf wrappers, of Liga Privada fame, and the wrappers alone are worth the price of admission. Underneath this dark and toothy wrapper are an Indonesian binder and spicy Nicaraguan long-fillers. This complex blend of tobaccos has undergone the Kuba Kuba infusion process to add herbal botanicals and light sweetness to the aroma and palate.

Kuba Arte is a subtle and well-balanced cigar. The Broadleaf wrapper adds body and enormous flavors of earth, coffee, and chocolate to the smoke and is the real star of the show. It's a wonderful traditional cigar blend that is lifted to greatness by the addition of the infusion. The palate is rich cafe mocha all the way through, with lighter herbal flavors from the Kuba Kuba essence which add notes of lemon peel, cherry, vanilla, and mint. The long-fillers deliver satisfying pepper all the way through, which builds as the sweetness from the tip fades to create a dynamic and complex smoke indeed. The Kuba Arte is more than worthy of its remarkable packaging.

Awesome all around

Love this so much. The water tower is a great collectible if you are a Drew Estate fan. The cigars that came with the tin was a great representation of what DE has to offer. So pleased with this purchase!
