Crowned Heads Mil Dias Marranitos Edicion Limitada 2022 Double Robusto cigars are a fine extension to the popular Mil Dias line. For those who haven’t given it a try, it’s a 90+ rated stick that is pretty much universally agreed to be great. It has very few detractors. And so naturally, the company is working on what they can do to expand enjoyment of one of their best blends.

Let’s try a different wrapper, shall we? The original Mil Dias wore a habano wrapper. This Marranitos limited edition cigar, it has been traded for an Ecuadorian Sumatra Maduro wrapper. Under that, there’s a Nicaraguan binder, and then a delicious mix of Nicaraguan, Peruvian, and Costa Rican tobaccos that were chosen to complement each other perfectly.

Seriously – Mil Dias is such an impressive blending effort. To take all those leaves and find the sweet spot to make it all work? Skill. And taste! These guys know what’s up. It has us believing the blend story, which says that it took about a thousand days (thus “mil dias”) to go from blend samples to finished product. Mil Dias originally was made in partnership with Luciano Meirelles and Eradio Pichardo of Tabacalera Pichardo, and after smoking these cigars we tend to believe that a good amount of work and consideration went into making them as fine as they are. Charting at 91 points with Cigar Aficionado for the original version, these are the real deal.

So, what’s the deal with the Marranitos Edicion Limitada? Well, the Sumatra wrapper gives the flavor profile a “whole other dimension,” according to Crowned Heads co-founder Jon Huber. A lot of the initial tastes are still there: pepper, sweet corn, florals… but now an oaky note has appeared in the core, and there’s more complexity in the background. Rich leather and wood make the smoke more layered and interesting than you might remember it from the original blend.

A thousand days later, we still can’t get enough.
