There are never enough Mil Días cigars to go around, and so Crowned Heads is forced to constantly create limited editions to supply that crazy demand.

First on the market was the Mareva El XX, a shorter format smoke that worked with the same blend as the original. In this second release, the Crowned Heads Mil Días Escogidos Edicion Limitada 2021 Double Corona still stays true to the same tobaccos. It goes in the opposite direction, however, extending the leaf roll for a nice long 7 x 49 double corona. Crowned Heads founder Jon Huber calls it a “radical left turn from the Mareva XX.”

He says that the vitola was inspired by the Hoyo de Monterrey Double Corona. He calls it “an homage to that iconic cigar.”

The tobaccos still include an Ecuadorian Habano wrapper, a Nicaraguan binder, and a long-filler mix of Nicaraguan, Peruvian, and Costa Rican leaf. This is what powered the original Mil Días to popularity. But now, in this longer format, the balance of the blend shifts quite a bit. You might be surprised to hear it, but if you smoke the original and Escogidos cigars side by side, you might see the difference.

This time around, cedar and earth lead into a complex array of interesting flavors like warm sourdough and florals. There’s a delicate balance of bitter and sweet as the tobacco shows just how many layers there are to this blend that took a reported “thousand days” to get just right.

Escodigos means “selected” in Spanish. This is the next variation up, and it’s quite a fascinating smoke to add to the blend portfolio.
