Whew, lad – let your inner ruffian out with this ridonkulous barber pole cigar! The Alec Bradley Black Market Filthy Hooligan just has bad behavior written all over it, doesn’t it?
It all started in 2013. Actually, it started in 2011. That was the first release of Black Market cigars and the four-country blend that sent people into spice heaven. After the success of that original cigar, the line was augmented with the Filthy Hooligan as a Saint Patrick’s Day celebration. Gone was the original natural Nicaraguan wrapper. In its place was a twist of Honduran candela and Nicaraguan maduro from Jalapa.
These dark brown and green stripes wound along the cigar, showing the skill of the rollers and the creativity of the blenders. For many people, it was a rare opportunity to experience some candela leaf, which is now a novelty in the cigar world (for a time many decades ago it was the dominant wrapper leaf in America if you can believe that). Inside, there was still the same spicy and peppery mix of Honduran and Panamanian long-fillers.
The flavors are quite different from what most people are used to in an Alec Bradley cigar. Cigar Aficionado gave it 88 points and described how “Initial notes of lemongrass are followed by vanilla, with touches of spicy cinnamon and freshly cut grass” and noted that there was a “touch of citrus on the woody finish.” In the battle between unfermented candela leaf and fully fermented Maduro, candela notes seem to come out on top.
The Alec Bradley Black Market Filthy Hooligan cigar winds up being a grassy, earthy, and fully satisfying smoke. That’s pretty impressive for something that seems like it’s just a lighthearted holiday smoke to pair with green beer, corned beef, and cabbage. Instead, it’s a nice cigar in its own right, perfect for times when you simply want something different.
Maybe the hooligan isn’t so filthy after all?

The look and the name were what sparked my curiosity about this one. My curiosity paid off with a smooth flavorful smoke. I only wish they weren’t limited edition.
Cigars direct is great to work with! The shipping is fast and the cigars are always up to par! Thank you!!
Overall not a bad tasting cigar. The artwork with the wrappers and label caught my attention although I didn't expect much. I found it to canoe and burn unevenly due to what I assume is caused by the double wrapper. I would buy again as a "cool to try" but couldn't see myself buying a box of these to enjoy.
