Man O' War RUINATION Robusto No.1
Any cigar with the word “ruination” in its name merits more than a passing glance. Its connection to the famed Man O’ War brand merits a third glance, and a purchase. A brain child of A.J. Fernandez, the protégé of famed Cuban tobacconist Don Alejandro Robaina, the entire brand has achieved celebrity in a remarkably short time.
Produced in Nicaragua like all of its family, the Ruination is likely the bad boy of the line. Fernandez pulled out the stops when he was creating this cigar, using a blend of Cuban-seeded ligero Nicaraguan and Honduran tobaccos as fillers. He didn’t stop there. These powerful and spicy tobaccos are complemented by a nice oily Ecuadorian-grown Habano that adds some pepper to an already heady mixture.
When smoking one of these, it is important to set aside sufficient time to truly experience all the evolving flavors. Along with spice and pepper, there’s a hint of sweetness lent by the ligeros. This blends into notes of leather, earth, and a faint oak-like taste.
The Man O’ War Ruination is a deep, powerful, full-bodied smoke, just what is expected of a fine cigar with a Cuban heritage. It is nicely balanced and smooth, not likely to jangle the nerves.
While a premium cigar, the Ruination is moderately priced, making it an affordable luxury. A majestic 5.5 x 54 Robusto No.1 will require some time to smoke. Sit back, put up your feet, and have one of these with a good single-malt Scotch.
