ABOUTHoyo de Monterrey Dark Sumatra

The Hoyo de Monterrey brand is considered some of the finest cigars available for a very reasonable price. With an impeccable Cuban pedigree, no wonder it has this kind of reputation. Now made in Honduras, Hoyo de Monterrey continues this winning tradition.

Of all the cigars in the brand, the Hoyo de Monterrey Dark Sumatra is considered to be one of the very best. With its very tasty, very dark, extensively fermented Ecuadorian-seeded Sumatra wrapper, this is one cigar that is just beautiful to behold. It almost seems a shame to light such perfection, but you should do it anyway.

What makes the Dark Sumatra unique is a creamy Dominican-seeded Piloto Cubano blended with a fine selection of Nicaraguan, Honduran, and other Dominican tobaccos to produce an outstanding filler. An otherwise strong cigar that might overwhelm lesser palates, this mellow yet flavorful filler tobacco lends its gentler nature to the robust wrapper leaf. A final interesting touch is a Connecticut Broadleaf binder. The result is a cigar that is complex enough to hold your attention without rocking you back on your heels.

That luscious oily wrapper would be very powerful by itself, lending strong notes of pepper to the cigar. The soothing Piloto Cuban in the filler lends rounded hints of chocolate that blend with the spicy Honduran and Nicaraguan tastes to present a unique flavor.

As with the entire Hoyo de Monterrey line, this is a well-constructed cigar, nice and solid without any soft spots that would cause it to fall apart in your fingers as you smoke it.

The Hoyo de Monterrey Dark Sumatra could only be accompanied by a glass of port or Scotch. A lesser potable wouldn’t do it justice.
