ABOUTH Upmann

The H. Upmann enterprise was founded in Cuba in 1844 by German brothers who were also bankers. The brothers created the cigars as marketing “swag” for their bank, and thus the legend was born. The firm of Menendez and Garcia bought the brand in 1935 and has continued to manufacture H. Upmann cigars.

Made in Cuba until the time of Castro, H. Upmann cigars were manufactured in the Canary Islands for a time before eventually finding their present home in the Dominican Republic. Today, H. Upmann products are manufactured under the aegis of the Altadis USA enterprise, makers of Romeo y Julieta, Montecristo, and several other popular, inexpensive, but quite good cigars.

H. Upmann cigars derive much of their medium-bodied quality from the Cuban-seeded and Dominican-grown Piloto Cubano filler tobacco, widely known for its robust flavor. What makes H. Upmanns really special is their Indonesian wrappers, providing a silky finish to these fine cigars.

Available in a wide range of sizes, the Petit is said to have been a favorite of the late President John F. Kennedy. On the eve of the trade embargo, legend has it that Kennedy acquired his own private stash before signing the paperwork enacting the ban.

From the 4.50 X 33 Demitasse Petit Corona, just right for a quick smoke with a cup of espresso, to the elegant 5.60 X 46 Churchill which pairs nicely with a more leisurely afterdinner brandy, aficionados will find an H. Upmann to suit the occasion. These are so reasonably priced that you can enjoy them often without emptying your wallet.
