Asylum is the project of Tom Lazuka, Kevin Baxter, and Christian Eiroa. While Eiroa had already produced numerous 90+ blends through Camacho, the other two names may not ring much of a bell. For one, Tom Lazuka was a restaurant entrepreneur before catching the cigar bug during the 1990s boom. Shortly thereafter, Tom would serve as a sales rep for Colibri and Camacho. Eventually, everything fell into place and Asylum Cigars was born—a place to push traditional limits by doing things like increasing a ring gauge to 80.

Aged tobacco is highly sought after in the cigar industry, so it’s no surprise when a brand puts out a line of aged cigars. What is surprising is when a company, in this case, Asylum, decides a single line isn’t going to cut the mustard, and they need to create an entire project that releases only the finest aged tobacco they can acquire. Asylum 33 cigars comprise this project.

Asylum 33 cigars are Honduran puros that use a 7 year aged tobacco blend. This one is a complex, slow burner, and you probably have an idea as to what your palate is in for, but let’s take a close look nonetheless.

On the cold draw of an Asylum 33 cigar, we’re getting wood, sweetness, and floral notes. Now burning, it’s bold red and black pepper, leather, and earth. Moving further down and some toasted nuts, cedar, and cream are apparent. The black pepper is at the forefront now. The draw was perfect, the burn even, and we didn’t even lose our minds smoking it, though the unexpected complexity almost blew them.
