It was in 1999 that the first of the La Gloria Cubana Series R cigars first made their appearance. Don Ernesto’s heir, Ernesto, Jr., introduced others in this very successful line. He is also the consummate hand rolling expert and cigar inspector who ensures that each cigar going into a box is flawless.
The Series R cigars contain the luscious well-aged blend of Dominican and Nicaraguan ligero fillers that La Gloria Cubana is known for. However, Ernesto, Jr. subjected the filler tobaccos to an additional period of aging, resulting in a silky-smooth smoke. The wrapper can either be a Connecticut Maduro or an Ecuadorian Sumatra, giving smokers a choice. The binder in this case is a Nicaraguan.
The Lo Gloria Cubana Series R cigars are notable for their dense construction that yields a tight draw that loosens after the first few puffs. And what puffs they are. The lucky smoker will detect wood and earth at first, tastes that gradually transmute into leather, chocolate, and rich dark coffee.
Series R Nos. 4, 5, and 6 are still available in a variety of sizes at a reasonable price. For example, the Maduro No. 5 averages about $7 a stick. So, if you’re lucky enough to score a box of these, do so without a feeling of impending financial doom. These cigars are meant for enjoying.
