There are some years when the tobacco harvest is noticeably better than the average. For this reason, tobaccos sometimes have vintage years like fine wines do. The 2000 was one of those and the Macanudos made from these superb leaves are simply stellar.
The Macanudo Vintage 2000 employed the same long-aged Mexican and Dominican fillers always found in this line, only these vintage leaves received an additional aging period, resulting in a cigar of exceptional smoothness. What really made this cigar a vintage, though, was the memorable harvest of the Connecticut shadeleaf wrappers. General Cigar, the maker of Macanudo, recognized early on that these were some extraordinary leaves and wisely set aside a cache of them for special treatment and aging.
This was an excellent and very smart move on General Cigar’s part. There have only been a handful of vintage years since1979 and the one of 2000 was perhaps the ultimate harvest in the Connecticut Valley.
Hand rolled in the Dominican Republic, the Macanudo Vintage 2000 cigar exhibits the same high-quality construction aficionados have come to recognize in Dominican products in general and Macanudos in particular. There is seldom a soft spot to be found in a Macanudo.
Macanudos are mild and smooth cigars with a short finish, making them ideal for brand-new cigar converts. They taste so good, though, that even smokers of lengthy experience enjoy them. Macanudos don’t offer a lot of complexity, but that’s fine. Sometimes you just need to sit back and enjoy a good cigar without thinking hard about the experience.
